The future is blue and green: How youth creativity is building BLUEFRONT’s sustainable legacy

BLUEFRONT is more than a 36-month project. It is the starting point for a long-term, youth-led movement for environmental sustainability, water justice, and climate action across Europe.

From the beginning, BLUEFRONT has been designed with the future in mind. Its ambition is not only to deliver activities during the project’s lifetime, but to create tools, networks, and learning pathways that can continue to grow, adapt, and inspire action long after the project ends.

At the heart of this vision are young people. BLUEFRONT places youth, especially those living in rural, remote, coastal, and aquatic regions, at the centre of Europe’s green and blue transition. Through local workshops, participatory research, creative activities, and transnational exchange, young people are supported to explore the water challenges affecting their communities and to imagine practical solutions.

One of the key ways this happens is through the Blue Schools. These are not traditional classrooms, but youth-led spaces for learning, creativity, and action. Within them, young people investigate local water issues, connect with community members and stakeholders, and co-create Water Roadmaps: practical action plans for the sustainable use, protection, and management of local water resources.

But BLUEFRONT’s legacy is not only about producing resources or plans. It is also about helping young people find their voice.

This is where creativity becomes essential. Complex topics such as the blue economy, water justice, climate change, and sustainable water use can often feel distant or technical. Art and culture can make these issues visible, emotional, and easier to understand. They can turn data into stories, local problems into shared experiences, and young people’s concerns into powerful calls for action.

Inspired by the idea of “artivism” – the combination of art and activism – BLUEFRONT encourages young people to communicate environmental challenges in creative and accessible ways. Photography, video, visual storytelling, posters, community murals, digital campaigns, and creative mapping can all become tools for awareness, dialogue, and change.

This creative approach also makes participation more inclusive. Not every young person feels confident speaking in public, writing policy messages, or using technical environmental language. Creative expression opens different ways to participate, especially for young people who may face language barriers, learning difficulties, social exclusion, or limited access to formal environmental education.

In this sense, creativity is not an extra part of BLUEFRONT. It is part of how the project makes youth participation more meaningful, more accessible, and more powerful.

Sustainability is also central to the project’s approach. The educational resources developed through BLUEFRONT, including the participatory research methodology, training materials, and online learning content, will be made openly available. This means that youth workers, educators, schools, community organisations, and local stakeholders across Europe will be able to use and adapt them in their own contexts.

BLUEFRONT is also building a network of young people who are ready to act.

Through local and international activities, participants are developing skills in environmental research, advocacy, communication, teamwork, and community engagement. An alumni network will help them remain connected, continue sharing knowledge, and support one another as they grow into active citizens and future leaders in the green and blue economy.

A key moment in this journey will be the transnational Blue Residency in Finland. Youth representatives from the partner countries will come together to share their Water Roadmaps, exchange experiences, and co-design a youth-led awareness campaign. Through social media and digital storytelling, this campaign will amplify young people’s messages on sustainable water use, the blue economy, and collective climate action.

The success of BLUEFRONT will not be measured only by the number of workshops delivered or Water Roadmaps created. It will be measured by the confidence young people gain, the stories they tell, the communities they mobilise, and the changes they help set in motion.

By combining research, creativity, advocacy, and open learning, BLUEFRONT is helping to shape a more sustainable and equitable Europe. Its impact is intended to ripple outward – from young people, to communities, to policy, and to future generations.

Because when young people are given the tools to understand water challenges, and the creative freedom to speak about them in their own voice, they can inspire communities to see water not only as a resource, but as a shared responsibility.
