The Blue School that went first: Lessons from Finland

In Finland, the first BLUEFRONT Blue School was implemented by Hyvärilä with 8th grade students from Pielisjoki School. Between September 2025 and February 2026, the students took part in a cycle of workshops focused on water systems, local water use, and sustainable management.
The Finnish Blue School played an important role in the project because it helped test the BLUEFRONT methodology in practice. Its experience offered useful insights for the wider consortium on how young people respond to hands-on water research, field visits, expert input, creative outputs, and the development of a Water Roadmap.
The BLUEFRONT model is built around youth-led research and action. Through the Blue Schools, young people are supported to investigate local water challenges, collect evidence, work with experts, and propose sustainable solutions for their communities. The wider project foresees Blue Schools across five countries, each leading to youth-designed Water Roadmaps and community actions.
Learning from a river
For the Finnish group, the focus was the Pielisjoki River. Instead of treating water as an abstract environmental topic, the students examined it as part of their everyday infrastructure and local ecosystem.
They measured water temperature, pH, visibility, transparency, and water level, and then analysed the results themselves. They also explored how groundwater filtration works through classroom-based activities, before seeing water systems in practice through local visits.
The programme included visits to water-related infrastructure and meetings with professionals who manage water systems and environmental responsibilities. These encounters helped students understand how water is collected, treated, distributed, used, and protected – not only in nature, but also in homes, public services, and industry.
One of the most practical exercises asked students to map their own household water use. This connected the topic directly to daily life and showed that sustainable water management is not only a matter for experts or authorities. It also depends on everyday habits, local awareness, and informed choices.
From awareness to proposals
A key strength of the Finnish Blue School was that it did not stop at awareness-raising. Students were encouraged to move from learning about water issues to identifying possible responses.
By the end of the workshop cycle, participants were able to propose concrete ideas linked to river protection and sustainable water use. These included buffer zones to reduce agricultural runoff, better filtration of industrial wastewater, electric boat engines to reduce oil pollution, improved stormwater management, and stronger public awareness of how leisure activities can affect river ecosystems.
These proposals show what happens when young people are given the tools to investigate an issue themselves. They do not simply repeat general messages about pollution or climate change. They begin to understand who uses water, who affects it, who manages it, and where change could happen.
Creative Roadmaps
The Finnish students presented their Water Roadmap through zines and visual outputs. This creative format made their findings more accessible and easier to share with others.
This is an important lesson for BLUEFRONT. A Water Roadmap does not have to look like a formal report. It can be visual, creative, and youth-led, as long as it communicates the problem, the evidence, the proposed solutions, and the message the young people want their community to hear.
Creative formats can also make participation more inclusive. They allow students to contribute through drawing, writing, layout, storytelling, photography, or design, not only through public speaking or technical analysis.
What the Finnish pilot shows
The Finnish Blue School shows why environmental learning needs to go beyond the classroom. Even in a country strongly associated with lakes, rivers, forests, and clean water, young people still need opportunities to understand how water systems actually work.
Water can feel invisible when it is abundant and reliable. But abundance does not automatically create awareness. Through fieldwork, observation, expert dialogue, and creative communication, students were able to look at familiar water systems in a new way.
The Finnish pilot also confirmed an important principle of BLUEFRONT: young people can engage seriously with complex environmental issues when the process is practical, local, and participatory.
The next step will be the Transnational Blue Residency in Finland, where youth representatives from the partner countries will share their Water Roadmaps, exchange experiences, and work together on common messages for sustainable water use and water justice.
The Finnish Blue School went first. What it showed is simple but powerful: when young people are trusted to observe, question, measure, visit, create, and propose, they can become active voices in shaping the future of their local water systems.
